Our depth of relationship with Christ
All through the Gospel of John, Jesus has thrown out phrases about the deep connection he and the Father have. We see it in John 10:38, “…I am in the Father and the Father is in me.” (NET) There is such depth in that phrase. It speaks of connection, an intertwining that Jesus and the Father have. Jesus uses this phrase in 14:20; 17:21. He also says things like, “My teaching is not my own” John 7:16 and “I do what Father has commanded.” 14:31 This Gospel goes on to say, “I and the Father are one.” 10:40 (NET) That is the ultimate expression of their connectedness.
Now Jesus says something remarkable to us. John 14:20,
“You will know at that time that I am in my Father and you are in me and I am in you.” NET
I am in the Father …and you are in me…and I am in you. This intimacy that the Father and the Son have had throughout eternity is now involving us. We are a part, because of Christ, in a level of connection with God so rich. If we know Jesus and the Father are one that means that we participate in this relationship. We do not become God, but are connected to him and are known by him. This relationship experienced by the Godhead is now open to those who know Christ. We can know God. We have been invited in to know him. That is beautiful. Thanks be to God.
The disciples eyes were blinded until they met the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. John 14:20…”I am in you” … the Holy Spirit dwelling in us. WOW
